One crop or two? Why we always recommend one

Because a ROC site can be built to cure up to around 120 hectares a season across two staggered crops, farmers often ask whether they should. Our answer is almost always no, and it comes down to grade.

Updated September 2026

What staggering means

Staggering means planting a second crop about a month after the first, so the two reach reaping and curing in sequence rather than at once. Done well it lets one curing setup handle close to double the hectares of a single crop, so around 120 hectares in a season instead of 80.

That is real extra capacity from infrastructure you have already paid for. The problem is that the second crop competes for the same land, labour, cash and attention as the first, usually at the point in the season when all four are already stretched.

Grade beats volume

Tobacco is paid on grade, not just weight. A single, well-managed crop that is reaped ripe and cured properly earns more per kilogram than a larger volume of mixed leaf. Split your attention across two crops and it is the timing that slips first: reaping at the right ripeness, and curing without rushing.

That is why we recommend around 80 hectares as one crop. Fewer hectares, but a higher average grade and a better return on each one. One good crop beats one and a half rushed ones.

Our recommendation

We build sites that can scale, and the capacity is there if a farm insists on two crops. But we will always tell you what we would do on our own land, and that is a single crop, done properly. When we size a tunnel we work to that, so the setup fits the way a good crop is actually grown rather than the biggest number a barn can cure.

The short version

  • A site can be built for up to around 120 hectares a season across two crops.
  • We do not recommend it. A single crop is the better decision.
  • Tobacco is paid on grade, and a single crop grades higher.
  • One well-timed crop returns more per hectare than two rushed ones.

Common questions

Common questions

We recommend a single crop. A well-timed crop of around 80 hectares returns more per hectare, because tobacco is paid on grade and one crop is easier to reap and cure well. A site can be built for two staggered crops, but we advise against it.
